It’s nice having access to central air conditioning after growing up without it

My parents raised my siblings and I in a rustic environment.

We always had running water, but often the water heater would quit working and we’d be forced to only use cold.

The roof had so many holes in it from underneath overhangs that there was an entire squirrel family living in the attic. My dad had the opportunity on multiple occasions to fill the holes to prevent more squirrels from getting inside to stay warm during the cold winter season, but he was never interested in taking the time to do things right in the house or outside. He would argue with my mom and claim there was absolutely nothing he could do about the holes, claiming that the squirrels would create new holes as soon as he filled the existing ones. To get an idea for my dad’s sheer laziness, we went with only one single bathroom in the house for years when there was a perfectly good spare bathroom in the basement. It just needed to be cleaned and to have a new toilet installed. It had water hookups installed from the previous tenant, so only one or two weekend’s worth of work were needed to get it working again. Regardless, it took my dad almost 10 years of us in that house before he’d fix the basement bathroom. He was also hardened about the use of air conditioning within the house. Sure, we faced more cold weather throughout the year compared to heat, but my mom was miserable without a/c in July and August every year. Now I’m extremely thankful for my air conditioner; I feel grateful for finally having access to a/c after so many years of living without it.
