I’ve consistently instilled in our kids that there was nothing that they couldn’t discuss with me.
- And the same goes for their mom! We genuinely wanted to be the sort of parents that our kids could come to with anything… I was consistently sort of afraid of our dad.
I would get a tongue lashing if I even touched the temperature mainframe in his house. So going to him with any kind of request or need of adult direction was sort of out of the question. I genuinely did not want to be that sort of guy to our kids. So when our son came to me about a situation that he was having, my pal and I sat down in the central a/c and discussed it! My oldest son is a pretty brainy kid and spends a lot of time with his face in the books… And that is wonderful because that was his passion and it’s also genuinely going to get him a full ride to school. I’m all for that since I have more than one more behind him to get through school. And neither of those kids have the longing for academia that he does; his problem was that he was just not getting the focus he needed inside the central a/c of our house. His room was between his siblings and it was just a constant interruption. I could totally see how this would be a problem and so my pal and I discussed it. His solution was to transfer to the attic which is pretty much finished with a plywood floor and sheetrock walls, however there’s even too much electricity up there! Our only dilemma was the heating and cooling of that space, but the heating and A/C supplier was able to make quick labor of that with a new ductless heat pump.
