I had been an HVAC technician for longer than he was alive, and I would have never told someone they needed a new heat exchanger
When the HVAC technician insinuated I didn’t know what I was talking about, I refused to argue with him. I told him he was the HVAC technician and he knew more than I did. I asked if he would come to the house and diagnose my furnace? He said he could get there in about two hours, and I agreed. I wasn’t going to pull rank on the HVAC technician and tell him I was the senior executive officer of the HVAC company. My daughter was the owner, and she got married before she and her husband took over my HVAC company. When the HVAC technician arrived, he did a cursory inspection of the furnace and told me I was partially right about the furnace. He told me he had to change out a part, and I just looked at him. He was going to put a new heat exchanger in our gas furnace. I asked him if he was sure he should do that. He said the heat exchanger was cracked and it could cause the leakage of formaldehyde or carbon monoxide poisoning. He got that part right, but I wasn’t going to let him install a new heat exchanger. I wanted a new furnace. I had been an HVAC technician for longer than he was alive, and I would have never told someone they needed a new heat exchanger. I called my son-in-law while the HVAC technician stood there. I handed him the phone and when my son-in-law was done talking, the HVAC technician was pure white. All he could do was ask if I was really the senior executive officer in the HVAC company, and I smiled.
