Last summer, my husband decided we need a little extra income coming in.
He redid the entire area above the garage, and turned it in an efficiency apartment with a private toilet and shower.
The only thing he hadn’t completed was putting HVAC in the apartment. The heat from the garage came up through the floor, and it got terribly hot in the summer. In the winter, it stayed just as cold as it was outside. There was no way we could put a tenant in the garage apartment before we installed the HVAC system. My husband was grumbling about installing HVAC. He talked about where he would put the furnace, and where we could put an air conditioning unit. I left him grumble for almost a week, before asking him if he had thought of installing a ductless HVAC system. He looked at me for a couple of minutes, and then said he had never thought about a mini split. I knew how efficient ductless HVAC was, because I worked for an HVAC company. I told him I could probably get a really good price on a mini split, and it wouldn’t be hard to bribe an HVAC technician to come over and help install it. All I had to do was mention I was cooking and he could have three or four HVAC techs at the house. He gave me a hug and told me he knew there was a good reason for marrying me. That weekend, we had a brand new mini split HVAC system sitting in the garage and three HVAC technicians waiting until after dinner to help install it.
